PS- also in my personal opinion, i think its funny that the 'midi' playback attempt was technically beyond douglas' technical / audio production capabilities (or 'depth' of tears) (and those who he might pay to make his work for him), failed, leaving an appropriately silenced venue, that was flooded and sadly (yet not surprisingly, given the previous piano pyromania), ruining wood saturated moldy steinways (if i am not mistaken given what i believe and in my personal opinion, were some post exhibition writings, and technical reviews. also, i am guessing somewhere in that exhibition and 'locke' (so freaking poetic when said in 'scottish' and not the queens english), is a true monster :)

I just saw this last week in New York at the St. James. Or rather, had the privilege of experiencing. It took me a few years to warm up to Sufjan's music. But over time his poetry became decidedly infectious and endearing, at least for me. And 20 years after his delightful epic album ILLINOIS, I was naturally compelled to see the Broadway adaptation, keenly crafted/produced by the very talented choreographer Justin Peck. It is a magical, emotion-filled journey that winds its way through the hearts of the audience. The pain of loss, the joy of love, the satisfaction of friendships, the confusion of growing up. My eyes were wet and I could hear tissues being used all around me. Yet everyone was smiling! How can something be so whimsical and forceful at the same time? There is no spoken dialogue, just the songs themselves, performed by excellent vocalists and a really fantastic live band. The dancing is exhilarating! Craftspersons of intense musicality, all the dancers are thrilling. Peck is the new Jerome Robbins, in my humble opinion. A celebration of life itself, during these difficult times. I only wish I could see it again and again... In conclusion: don't miss this.

Putting the combined creative genius of Claus Guth, Helmut Deutsch and Jonas Kaufmann together to illustrate the transformational journey between life survival and death, using just Schibert lieder, could only result in one thing - an outstanding performance of dramatic emotion and sensitivity. Oh why is this not available on dvd? It is frustrating not being able to see such an intriguing production.

One of my favorites is predatory wasp, seers tower, or Casimir Pulaski. Those songs are some of the most emotional ones but the story they are telling is something they will always be special and make me feel really connected to the characters and their stories. Also, watching them dance out these songs adds to the realness of the songs and makes me love them even more.

He barely got into the specifics of what Arthur actually did to break up the spoils system. Listen to all the sheep clap just because he threw in some Obama praise and Trump barbs in front of a crowd of NYC oligarchs, though. Did he even reference the Pendleton Reform Act? I might have missed it amidst all that claptrap. What a hack. Fast forward 5-6 years from the date of this lecture, my city is a disaster with more law-abiding, tax-paying citizens disgruntled and fearful due to the crime and decay caused by the tone and policies of Biden, de Blasio, Adams, and Bragg. The faux-intellectual circle jerk of the moneyed and intelligentsia classes continues, though-their heads firmly inserted up their rear ends-pretending White supremacy is the number one problem plaguing the U.S. in 2024 🙄

Saw the last two performances in Chicago. Left salty… as in my tears kept flowing - it wasn’t worth trying to wipe them away! It’s an incredible piece, with fantastic arrangements and vocals, a beautiful and heartbreaking story, all told through imaginative movement by a phenomenal cast. I hope it moves to Broadway so I can witness it again. 🙌 Justin, Jackie, the rest of the creative team and cast deserve all the standing o’s and accolades. I hope Sufjan gets to see it, and I hope it’s preserved on film too! 🙏

Not that I want the few remaining tickets to be taken up when I'm trying to figure out a way to get out to NYC to see it at Park Ave Armory, but saw the last couple of performances in Chicago, and was a in a puddle of tears by the end; just couldn't hold it in as much as I tried. What a wonderfully moving piece told through dance, music, acting. Was always a fan of Peck's work, and of Sufjan's from Call Me By Your Name. So happy to see dancers I've followed for years now with amazing careers -- Ricky, Ben, Robbie, Craig, and newer dancers whose careers will skyrocket. Let's hope there's a Broadway transfer, or a filmed version, as it'd be great to view multiple times to see the detail and bigger picture from different perspectives.

I've seen this show three times (twice this past summer at their run at Bard College and a week ago in Chicago) and can honestly say I have never seen a show with the power and impact of Illinoiose. It is a truly unique experience - it is a dance performance with no dialogue, but has a story that is moving, deeply emotional and uplifting. The music is exceptional, the dancers are extraordinary - moving and expressive - the story is heartbreaking and funny and fun - but that doesn't do justice to the experience of this performance. In much the same way that you can't really explain why art of any kind moves you as much as it does, this show defies my ability to adequately convey how incredible it is. Go and see this.
